Faculty-Led Study Abroad and Study Away Programs

Miami University Faculty-Led programs are the most popular way for Miami students to go abroad. These programs consist of Miami faculty members accompanying a group of students abroad. Faculty members teach the courses and students receive Miami University academic credit. Students will pay tuition and fees to Miami on a per-credit-hour basis as if they were at the Oxford campus. Financial aid, scholarships, and waivers may apply.

Miami University's Dolibois European Center in Luxembourg (MUDEC)

Founded in 1968, MUDEC is one of Miami University's oldest continuous study abroad programs. The MUDEC Center accepts 130-140 students every semester. Students enroll in Miami classes taught by European and Miami faculty members. Students can choose from a variety of classes, including thematic sequences and some Miami Plan foundation courses. Students who participate in the MUDEC Program pay Miami University for tuition, fees, housing and meals. See the Dolibois Center's website for more information.

Exchange Programs

Exchanges are the traditional way to study abroad. Miami students will exchange places with a student from another country, who will come to Miami when the Miami student goes abroad. Miami has entered into agreements with many different universities around the world to exchange students. On an exchange program, students pay Miami tuition and fees. In many cases, students pay Miami's room and board costs, and in other cases they pay room and/or board costs directly to their host university. All scholarships and financial aid apply - including Dependent Tuition Waivers.

On an exchange program, Miami students are typically in the classroom alongside students from that university. In many cases, classes will be in the host language. However, over the last few years there has been an increase in the number of classes offered in English. University exchanges do not arrange cell phones, insurance, excursions or flights. Many of those items will be the responsibility of the student. Students participating in exchange programs must be prepared to be independent and responsible for themselves.

Third-Party Provider Programs

The Study Abroad office and Miami's academic departments have researched and approved a set of programs called Co-Sponsored for credit-transfer purposes and for academic rigor. These study abroad programs allow students to apply their federal financial aid and Miami's own scholarships (but NOT Dependent Tuition Waivers) to their experience abroad. Co-Sponsored programs are unique in that they provide many of American-style support services that students have come to expect. Many offer classes in English in countries such as China, Italy, or Argentina where university classes are generally in the native language. These programs arrange housing and may also arrange flights, meals, excursions, insurance, and cell phones. These programs also have staff who arrange cultural activities to introduce students to their host culture and are a useful bicultural/bilingual resource to students, particularly in case of emergency.

Co-sponsored programs charge the students directly, and the costs of the program are not set by Miami University. Miami University will forward scholarships and financial aid but students will pay nothing to Miami University while studying abroad. The Co-Sponsored category applies to semester or year-long programs only; all summer programs through external providers fall into the Approved or Non-Miami categories. You may not apply your Miami scholarships to the summer programs offered by these study abroad providers. Miami scholarships can only be applied to a Co-Sponsored program once. If you have questions about applying Miami scholarships to a Co-Sponsored program, please contact the Office of Student Financial Assistance.

Study Abroad Programs

Miami University recognizes that students have different interests and needs. Due to the large number of study abroad options available there is no way for Miami to review every university or study abroad program that students wish to participate in. Miami will approve a program for credit transfer provided that they are accredited in the United States or in their own countries. Miami scholarships do not apply to Approved programs. For more information about these study abroad options, you can talk to a Study Abroad Adviser.
